Russia, Armenia FMs discuss US-mediated peace attempts
Mirzoyan updated Lavrov on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s recent discussions with US President Donald Trump and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Lavrov emphasized the need for lasting peace between Baku and Yerevan, consistent with the trilateral agreements from 2020–2022, highlighting Russia’s central role and its readiness to continue facilitating normalization between the two countries.
The ministers also addressed current matters on the Russian-Armenian agenda. On Monday, Azerbaijan and Armenia shared the text of the peace deal they initialed on Friday at the Washington trilateral summit attended by Trump, Pashinyan, and Aliyev. The 17-point agreement covers mutual border recognition, renunciation of territorial claims, non-use of force, establishment of diplomatic ties, border delimitation, and withdrawal of legal claims. The accord will take effect once both nations complete internal ratification procedures.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization under the trilateral framework. In a call with Pashinyan, he stressed the importance of advancing sustainable peace and discussed reopening transport routes in the South Caucasus. Pashinyan briefed Putin on the Washington summit, while Putin updated him on talks with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and preparations for his upcoming meeting with Trump in Alaska.
